Packing and Getting Ready to Move

If you are looking to move within Rockland County in the near future, now is the perfect time to start organizing and packing your personal belongings. Prepping and packing for a move takes time. 360 Degree Moving is here to help with a few helpful tips on getting ready for your move.

Step 1- Declutter and Organize

It’s amazing how much we tend to accumulate and store over time in Rockland County homes and beginning to pack can become overwhelming if you don’t first declutter and organize. I suggest starting in the room where you most store your items, whether it’s the basement, attic, or spare room. I like using the method where you make 3 piles. One for must keep items, the second for donation and the third for trash. As Marie Kondo would say, if it does not spark joy, get rid of it. When you are done, go over the must keep pile one more time, you will notice that you have put items in that pile that you can part with. Continue with this process room by room.

Step 2- Begin to Pack Non-Essential Items First

Once you have decluttered, start packing boxes with non-essential items, such as un-used linen, toys, shoes, seasonal clothing, and miscellaneous items. Make sure you pack like items in the same box, this will make unpacking a lot easier instead of just packing different various items in boxes. For example, all linen should go in a linen box, all toys in a toy box, all shoes in a shoe box etc. Once you have filled the box up, tape it shut and label the box on all sides including the top. Do not over pack your boxes, the lid of the box should close flat. This will make it easy to stack boxes on top of each other. Also, do not pack your books in large boxes. Books tend to become very heavy and not easy to move. Therefore, it is best to pack your books into smaller double corrugated boxes. Also, make sure to label which boxes are “Fragile” and which ones are “Heavy”.

Step 3- Start Packing Essential Items

As your moving day nears, you can begin packing the remaining essential items. Remember to empty all drawers and filing cabinets. Your Rockland County moving professionals should not move furniture with items inside of them due to the extra weight making furniture more susceptible to damage. All glass dishware and china should be carefully packed with extra packing paper in “china boxes”. These boxes are double corrugated and much sturdier. China boxes will ensure safe transport of your fragile items if you pack your items properly. Heavy on the bottom, and lighter items on top layers. Have a layer of crumpled paper on the bottom of the box to give an air-ride and use packing paper to fill any voids to prevent shifting in the box. Also, do not pack a China box to the very top, leave 2" of crumpled paper on the top so that nothing will be crushed on the top of the box. Hanging clothes can be transported in wardrobe boxes. Wardrobe boxes are tall boxes with a bar that will allow you to easily transport your clothes from the closet into the wardrobe box and from the box into the closet in your new home. 360 Degree Moving provides free wardrobe box rentals on move day to their customers. One less thing to worry about!

Step 4- Prepare your “Moving Day Essential Box”

Once you have booked your move, and moving day nears, it is important to prep for a “Moving Day Essential Box”. This box will help you get through the first few days in your new home until you fully unpack your essential items, which will take time. Must haves to have in this box are clean bedding and pillows. Your toiletries such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, brush, bath soap, dish soap, sponge, paper towels, and bath towels. Kitchen items should include plates, bowls, cutlery, and snacks. A change of clothes for all family members will help everyone settle in for the next day and most importantly tools. You will need a portable tool set and scissors or a blade to help you open all your packed boxes. A flashlight may also be helpful in case your electric isn’t up and running in your new home.

Step 5- Gather All Valuables and Personal Belongings

On move day, make sure you have gathered all valuables and important documents. Movers in Rockland County are not to be tasked with handling such items. It is best practice to have all your valuables, and important documents separated, and secured prior to the movers arriving at your home for move day.
